With many people choosing to opt out their manual toothbrushes with the newest lines of mechincal ones, people are starting to realize and see the difference in plaque reduction and overall dental hygiene when using their electronic toothbrushes. Today, we are going to analyze if mechanical toothbrushes truly do work better for preserving your dental hygiene in comparison to the manual toothbrushes we have been using for a century.
Though, in general, brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day is the minimum you need to preserve and maintain your oral and dental hygiene, studies have recently shown that using a mechanical toothbrush with your oral care can be marginally more effective. The Cochrane Library published a review in 2014 that measured 51 different trials of adults and children using electric or manual toothbrushes for a month. Overall, electronic toothbrushes seem to have a superior way of reducing plaque and preventing gum disease. Plaque was reduced by 11% after one to three months use of the electronic toothbrush and reduced by up to 21% after three months usage. Likewise, risk for gingivitis was reduced by 6% between one- and three-months usage, and up to 11% after three months usage.
Ultimately, electronic toothbrushes are proven to be more effective in preserving and maintaining your oral health. As more and more of these models become available to market, it may be worth looking into a model that fits your needs and within your budget.
